Informal vs Formal Writing

We're not focusing on WHAT you say at the moment; rather, we're concentrating today on HOW you say it. Despite the strength or weakness of your opinion, you can still relate it in a INTELLIGENT, FORMAL manner. Do not be so lazy or casual in your tone. If you don't continually practice your formal writing every opportunity we have in class, then how can you ever improve?

Read the information on the link below and leave a comment (with your name) that compares and contrast the difference between FORMAL and INFORMAL writing. (Hint: TRY TO USE A FORMAL TONE)

INFORMAL VS FORMAL

Consider these questions in your comment:

1. What makes a piece of writing formal or informal?

  4. Informal writing uses more of simple words. Formal writing uses more intelligent type words. For example a informal speaker or writer may say or write the word "kid", but a fermal speaker or writer may say the word "child" instead. Also, amybe an informal person would say "quote" but a more formal person may use the word "quotation". To make informal turn to formal you may need to say the word that sound more intelligent instead of the less intelligent work.

  6. Formal and informal writing are different in an iinumerable amount of ways, but can be similar in others. Formal writing is when one writes in a tone more suitable for academic or scholarly situations, but also, can be used in situations such as letters and emails to people who are just aquaitences. One should not use contractions or common sayings or phrases. Formal writing should try to avaid the first and second person also. Informal writing is when one writes in a tone more suitable for chat rooms or everyday speech. One who wants to send an email to their close friend might not want to use formal language. In informal writing you can use contractions and things to this nature.- Ben Dibble

What makes a piece of writing formal or informal is the words you use, the way you set up sentences and the grammar you use.
Obvious "no-no's" would be using vague words, using the wrong punctuation, ,and using contractions.
You can turn informal writing formal by changing the words you use, correcting your grammar, and not disobeying the rules of formal writing

  8. 1. Formal writiting is writing that uses the concept of placing intelligent words in a smoothb and eloquent word order. It means that the words are easy to understand but a five or six year old child could not invent. Informal writing is when the writeer use the language as they would in a public chatroom, using contractions when you should use whole words, as well as putting in plhrases such as IDK, or ROFL, when these are used, often times, the sentetnces look like those that could be formed by an average first grader.

    2. The obvious no-no's of formal writing is using contractions, abbreviations, silly cliche's, and juimbled or made-up words.

    3. If a paper is very informal, the writer, or the one looking for errors might go back and reword the words in a more "readable" order, as well as getting rid of contractions, leaving behind the cliches, and using more descriptive words like quotation instead of quote, or child instead of kid.

  9. The elements of writing that makes the writing formal or informal is based around the writers tone by the choice of the writers words. There are many things that are not to be used for writing in a formal manner, such as common colloquial words, contractions, and first and second person. Transforming informal writing into formal writing is quit simple, just change the way it iis presented. Any phrase can be turned into formal writing, no matter how informal.

  10. When writing in a formal manner, one must consider certain rules and guidelines in order to reach the acceptable level of formality. First off, one should remember that a formal paper should be written intelligently, not have the aura of an every day conversation. A second major area of writing formally is word choice. The words that are selected to be in a final draft are crucial to the level of formality.

  11. When a person uses formal writing they are multiple things to avoid. First, you must stay away from contractions. Instead of saying "can't" spell out the word as a whole. One must also stray away from cliches and vague words. The most important rule to remember is keep your writing in third person, there will be no first or second person in formal writing.

  13. A piece of writing becomes formal when you use words that are not too vague, also when writing a formal paper you should avoid using contractions, do not ask the reader questions, do not tell the reader what this paper is about either. Rearrange the words in a sentence to make the essay sound more formal.

When doing formal writing tense shift is a major problem for some people, but pratice will be of essence to a person. When writing do not start a sentence off with a coordinating conjunction. Formal writing does not involve using the word (you).

  24. 1. The use of words, the grammar, what person it is in, and the absence of contractions. Also much more than that, such as the punctuation and sentence structure.
    2. No-no's; "I'm, y'all, pretty, big, cute" Using terms like that.
Grammar, as in putting the wrong "you're" in a spot.
    3. Changing the grammar and the sentence itself, the improperness of anything, and fixing obvious errors.

  25. A paper or essay being formal, or informal all depends on the word choice of the author. Formal papers tend to be written in third person, and are normally unbiased in the sense that the author does not offer an opinion on a subject. Some obvious "no-no's" of informal writing that can be avoided are: using first, and second person perspective, you should always use third person when writing a formal paper, and another obvious "no-no" of informal writing is slang. Slang is acceptable only for informal writings, and would be a waste of time for formal papers.

  26. When writing in formal one must try avioding the use of first and seecond person tones instead use third person. A person should use more intelligent words than slang and replace words that have been place in the writing, for example instead of cute replace it with beautiful. Vague words could be confusing so it is in best intrest to avoid . Never use run ons.
